In our area, they've been experimenting with solar panels but there's no sense yet that it will get replicated on a commercial scale.
What does seem to be doable is an attempt to use sunlight to heat water for homes -- running the water through a panel that contains a maze of piping. It's liek a large-scale, controlled version of what happens when your garden hose lays out in the sun while there's still water in it.
